Sarpagandha is laden with alkaloids, which hold strong sedative traits that positively influence an agitated brain, mind and central nervous system. It is hence a very useful therapy for insomnia, as it pacifies the mind and promotes deep sleep at night.
Sarpagandha, the main ingredient in Sarpagandha ghan vati has a wide spectrum of valuable therapeutic actions, mainly effective in the treatment of hypertension and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, anxiety, epilepsy, insomnia and insanity. It is also used as a sedative and a hypnotic drug.
As per Ayurvedic Formulary of India (AFI)[1], it is prepared by using 10 parts of roots of Rauwolfia serpentina (Sarpagandha), 2 parts of Hyocyamus niger seeds (Khurasani ajowan), 1 part of Nardostachys jatamansi roots (Jatamansi), 1 part of Cannabis sativa leaves (Bhanga).
